This probably should have gone in the plot and structure post for this month, but I just saw it, and it was too good to edit in. The talented D. S. Thornton has a page with lots of writing information, but the part about advice for new writers is what caught my eye. If you’ve got a self-edit checklist, or if you’re struggling with a story, you might compare the tips with a chapter or two to see if you’ve happened upon a pitfall. I see every one of the bullet points in manuscripts, and while I believe you can break any rule of writing, a lot of the problems are things that sneak into manuscripts, and that will strengthen your story if you can get them to sneak back out!
